A downstem is required for giving smoother and more comfortable hits. It breaks up smoke into small bubbles with the help of a downstem while traveling through the water chamber. The small bubbles allow the smoke to spread out, which enables it to pass through more water, cooling it down fast and clearing off the harsh particles.
